Deb knows the history of families and remembers funny stories about things that the rest of us have long forgotten. She can tell you about who she was in grade seven with and talk about pets that we all had decades ago.

Yes, she has a memory that we likely all wish wasn’t quite so efficient at times.

Understanding REM Sleep – Rapid Eye Movement and the Other Stages of Sleep

When we sleep we go through 5 stages of sleep: stages 1 through 4, called non-rem stages, and the 5th stage called REM sleep. REM is an acronym for rapid eye movement and describes our eyes’ activity during this stage of sleep. It is during rapid eye movement sleep that our bodies are thought to restore themselves and it is said that without this stage of sleep, we would die. This is thought to be the case because if we starve ourselves of REM sleep, our brain sends a signal forcing our bodies to jump into REM a lot quicker the next time we lay down for sleep. This is the brain’s way of trying to make up for the lost REM the last time around – a type of self-preservation.

Dreaming occurs mostly during this stage of sleep. The average person typically spends about 2 hours of their sleeping time dreaming – not that we know with any certainty why we dream. Sigmund Freud believed dreams to be a kind of safety mechanism – our brains way of letting go of any of our unconscious desires. It wasn’t until 1953 that scientists started taking a closer look at REM sleep and dreaming. It was at this time that they figured out that the vast majority of our dreams occur during this stage of sleep.

Interestingly, most birds and mammals show signs of going through REM sleep, but reptiles and other animals of the cold-blooded nature do not.

At the onset of REM, the brain sends signals to different areas, ultimately being relayed to the cerebral cortex – the area of the brain responsible for thinking, organizing information and overall learning. Signals are also sent out that shut down neurons in the spinal cord. This causes the temporary paralysis that we experience while in this stage of sleep. This paralysis of the limbs prevents people from physically acting out their dreams – although it does happen.

In these rare cases when someone acts out a dream they are having, it’s called REM sleep behaviour disorder (RSBD). If someone is suffering from RSBD, it can be very dangerous for the sufferer as well as anyone else around. Let’s say, for example, that someone who was suffering from RSBD was having a dream about a football game; they might get up and start running or whip their arms around while going through the motions of throwing a football.

Studies suggest that REM sleep aids in the development of the part of the brain utilized in learning – which may explain why infants spend so much more time in REM than adults. It is thought that it also affects the way we learn mental skills. One such study that proved this had participants learn a skill and then subsequently deprived the first group of non-REM sleep while depriving the second group of REM sleep. After waking up, the first group was able to recall the skill they learned while the second group was not.

Some sleep experts hypothesize that the brain takes the random signals it receives throughout the stages of REM sleep and attempts to find meaning in them. The result of the interpretation of this fragmented brain activity are what we know as dreams.

It’s important to recognise that this response is okay, it’s normal. Often, exposure to the REAL WORLD sees all the emotional debris and negative thoughts regarding your stutter flood back when it’s your turn to speak. This can be a barrier to the management of your stutter.

When you are considering treatment for your stutter, plan for psychological change. The change in yourself may not be immediate, but rest assured, changes must happen in order to become fluent and use good technique. A change in how you think about, and the way you perceive, yourself is of vital importance. A desire and willingness to make these adjustments will reinforce your psychological foundation so that fluency can be achieved.

Cognitive training and support is of major importance when you are attempting to change something about yourself. Your negative thoughts about your stutter / yourself are not necessarily true. Seek out good cognitive training and support so that your fluency is not restricted to only behind closed doors. Cognitive training with improved self-belief will see your wonderful new fluency extend to all areas of your life.

You may find yourself coughing nasty-tasting fluids back up into your mouth from your stomach, and you may even awaken during the night choking on this bile. While these symptoms could be cause for concern, there are ways that you can change conditions so that they don’t happen as frequently.
